Dave Osborn’s career with over 52 years of experience in telecommunications spans across multiple cities, companies, and industries. After retiring as the CEO of one of Texas’s largest independent telecom companies, he made waves in a new venture as a published author.
Osborn’s path to the telecommunications industry began unexpectedly. While attending college in East Texas, he worked as a disk jockey, which sparked his interest in electronics. That curiosity led him to pursue a career in military electronics, which eventually laid the foundation for his future in telecom. His journey took him from Southwestern Bell/AT&T, where he worked in major cities like Dallas, St. Louis, and Houston, to roles with increasing responsibility, eventually landing him at AT&T’s headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey.
In 2004, Osborn took on a new challenge when he became the Chief Executive Officer of VTX1 Companies in South Texas. Over the next 18 years, he led the company through significant growth, increasing its revenues and income fivefold. Under his leadership, VTX1 became the second-largest independent telecom and broadband company in Texas, cementing Osborn’s reputation as a visionary leader in the industry.
When Osborn retired in December 2022, it marked the end of a remarkable career in telecommunications. However, retirement did not signal the end of his ambitions. For over 20 years, Osborn had known that when the time came, he would transition into a career as a writer. Having enjoyed writing since his graduate school days, where he famously submitted a 120-page paper—far exceeding the usual length for most students—Osborn had always harbored a deep appreciation for the written word.
Throughout his career, Osborn had put his writing skills to good use, authoring sales management manuals, product training materials, and policy guides. But it was in retirement that he found the time and focus to pursue his long-held dream of becoming a published author. In 2024, Osborn published The Adventures of Piper series, a heartwarming children’s book series inspired by the rescue and training of his adopted dog, Piper. The first two books in the series, Piper’s Journey Home and Piper Learns to Serve, have already garnered praise for their engaging storytelling and life lessons about compassion, perseverance, and the importance of adopting rescue animals.
While Osborn’s new writing career has been marked by success, he is already looking ahead to his next project: a fiction novel titled Signals of Deception. The international suspense and intrigue novel will introduce a recurring protagonist and promises to expand Osborn’s literary repertoire beyond business and children’s literature.
Looking back on his transition, Osborn reflects, “I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling. Whether in business or in writing, the ability to share experiences, ideas, and lessons with others is incredibly rewarding. I’ve spent over 50 years in telecommunications, building companies and shaping careers, but now, I’m excited to build a new legacy as a writer.”
As Osborn continues to build on his literary career, his readers can expect to see more from the man who, after decades of leading in the business world, is now leading with his words.
